Traditions and celebrations in the communities

Easter is one of the most important festivals in Spain and on Tenerife. In the north of the island, numerous processions and celebrations take place in the various municipalities, deeply rooted in tradition.

La Laguna:

Holy Week in La Laguna, the "Semana Santa," is the oldest and most important in the Canary Islands. On Maundy Thursday, processions take place in the city's various churches, during which penitential groups carry their "pasos," elaborately crafted figures depicting biblical scenes, through the streets. On Good Friday evening, the grand "Procesión del Santo Entierro" takes place, attended by thousands of people.

Güímar:

Holy Week is also of great importance in Güímar. On Good Friday, the "Procesión del Silencio" takes place, a procession in complete silence that is particularly impressive.

La Orotava:

In La Orotava, two large processions take place on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. The Easter Sunday procession, "Domingo de Resurrección," celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter Monday procession, "Lunes de Pascua," honors the Virgin Mary.

Other municipalities:

Various Easter celebrations also take place in the other municipalities of northern Tenerife. In Garachico, a "Procesión del Santo Entierro" (Procession of the Holy Entierro) with hooded figures takes place on Good Friday. In Icod de los Vinos, the "Procesión del Calvario" (Procession of Calvary) on Good Friday is particularly worth seeing.
