Hidden in the Teno Mountains in western Tenerife lies the village of Masca – a place that seems untouched by time. Between rugged cliffs, dense palm groves, and steep precipices, the famous Masca Gorge stretches down to the Atlantic Ocean. Once a secret tip for adventurers, the hike is now a regulated, yet unforgettable excursion into one of the wildest landscapes in the Canary Islands.
The Masca Gorge is a breathtaking hiking destination steeped in fascinating legends. Surrounded by impressive cliffs and rich flora and fauna, this hike offers a unique nature experience. Let yourself be swept away by the beauty of the surroundings and enjoy the tranquility that this remote part of Tenerife has to offer. Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply a nature lover, the walls of this gorge will transport you to a new world with every step. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on an unforgettable adventure!
The village of Masca itself is worth a visit. At an altitude of around 600 meters, the few houses cling to the rock faces. The narrow streets, traditional buildings, and spectacular views quickly give you the feeling of having arrived at the end of the world.
Until the 1970s, Masca was only accessible via a rocky mule track. It was only the construction of a narrow, winding road that made the village accessible – and even today, the journey there is an adventure in itself. Anyone who comes to Masca immediately senses that time moves differently here. No high-rise hotels, no mass tourism. Instead, peace, nature, and genuine island charm.
The Masca Gorge is one of the most famous and impressive hikes on Tenerife. The trail leads for about 4.5 kilometers through a narrow gorge down to the sea. Rugged rock faces rise vertically for several hundred meters, while the narrow path repeatedly crosses the streambed, leads over rocks, and winds through green oases with palm trees and agave plants.
Important: The hike has been strictly regulated since its reopening. Following several accidents and rescue operations, the gorge was closed in 2018 and extensively renovated. Since its reopening, clear rules have been in place:
Reservation required: Anyone wishing to hike through the Masca Gorge must register online beforehand. There are only a limited number of places available each day.
Please note the opening hours: The gorge is currently only open on weekends and public holidays.
Equipment requirement: Sturdy footwear with good tread is essential. Helmets are provided free of charge on site and must be worn throughout the entire hike.
No boat transfer: Previously, it was possible to take a boat to Los Gigantes at the end of the gorge – this option no longer exists. The return route follows the same path back to Masca. Therefore, you should be in good physical condition.
No guided tours can be booked on site: Anyone wanting a guided hike must book it in advance with a certified provider.
These measures serve not only safety but also the protection of the sensitive natural environment in the gorge. The flora and fauna are to be preserved – and this can only be achieved if access is controlled.
The road to Masca is narrow, winding, and very popular with tourists. Especially in the mornings, traffic jams and parking problems are common. Therefore, it's advisable to start early or travel outside of peak hours. Those who don't want to drive themselves can book guided transfers or combined tours.
The village boasts small cafes and restaurants with fantastic views – perfect for a break before or after a hike. Even those not hiking through the gorge can enjoy a memorable day here: with short walks, a café con leche, and an unforgettable view.
